Penny Rope is unique because it is a quirky prison cell themed accommodation that sleeps two people. Feel the experience of being in a cell overnight, (without being locked in from the outside) knowing you can get up and leave in the morning.

They offer an underground cell themed unique space close to the heart of vibrant Margate. With an old fashioned authentic feel, Penny Rope bestows all the modern features necessary for today’s living. Cosy bunk beds, 100% Egyptian white cotton linen, own shower/lavatory on site, tea and coffee making facilities, private walled garden, seasonal organic vegetables, fruit and herbs, BBQ facilities, WiFi, vintage bike hire, dogs welcome. Optional prison themed mug shots.

Penny Rope is just a three minute walk away from the beach and 5 minutes from the Turner Contemporary and 10 minutes from Dreamland. There are many good cafes and eating places close by, and a newly listed tidal pool at Walpole Bay a short walk away.


The Grade l listed Shell Grotto is just around the corner, along with Scott's Furniture - a 3 floor delight of antique furniture and collectables. Penny Rope is annexed to a larger Grade ll listed Georgian property called The Booth, where The Warden will take care of all your prison needs throughout your spell inside. 

Guest access

Own separate access via steps down from the street level. Walled garden and washing facilities accessed through a gate to the side of the main house. Please note that unfortunately there is no wheelchair access.

Interaction with guests

They will do all they can to make your stay in Margate as enjoyable as is possible. They have a chalk board listing events and happenings of the moment and a thorough knowledge of Margate underground activities. A map is provided and cafe/restaurant recommendations.

The neighbourhood is multicultural and earthy. Lively and quiet - depending on what's going on.

Getting around

There is a good regular bus service called The Loop every 10 minutes, connecting all the Thanet towns. Railway station in Margate. Parking is free in most places.

Other things to note

Two minute walk from the sea. Miles of local sandy beaches and coves within a short walk or drive. The new Turner Contemporary art gallery with regular exhibitions. Dreamland Retro ride park opened in 2015. Retro vintage Margate has many delights to explore from food to independent shops. Short dive to Sandwich's golf courses and to the Broadstairs annual folk festival.
